Let's Get it Straight

Clusters of funnel shaped flowers, mostly in shades of red, pink or white, are borne late spring and early summer by these long lived, deciduous plants. Among the easiest and most popular of all summer flowering shrubs, weigelas are stalwarts of the shrubbery and are also suitable for a mixed border.

The foxglove like flowers are borne on the previous season's wood, so for the best display weigelas should be pruned straight after flowering. They are mostly native to E Asia, and are hardy in all parts of Britain, thriving on any fertile soil.

Cultivation
Plant from mid autumn to early spring in any well drained fertile soil that does not dry out. Choose a sunny or partially shaded site. Mulch generously and feed in spring.

Propagation
Take softwood cuttings in early summer, or semi ripe cuttings in mid summer and root in a coldframe. Alternatively, grow from hardwood cuttings taken after late autumn.

Pruning
Trim back just after flowering to maintain vigour. Thin out a few old shoots to the ground and shorten the strongest new shoots to a few buds above old wood.

It is usually trouble free of pests
