Our peaches are only just starting to ripen, and already the birds are on the warpath.

In order to save some for ourselves, I have picked a good number of the unripe fruit. Some of these have been cut in half and de-stoned, then gently simmered for ten minutes in sugar and water. It's absolutely delicious (my favourite pudding is to combine this with some home-made cake and custard!!!).

The other half I have put in with our bowl of apples. Someone suggested that this may help them to ripen. I'll just have to wait and see!

Alec.

Hi Alec,

Try putting the unripe peaches in with bananas, as there is something in the bananas that help other fruit ripen quicker.

You could always try covering the tree in some sort of netting to stop the birds eating the fruit?

I hope you enjoy your peaches, they sound lovely, especially with cake and custard!! Peach crumble with custard is also yum Smiley

Mmmmm custard and peaches - where did you say you lived again hehehe - I am coming round for dinner!

I have what we think is a nectarine or a peach tree in our garden, the fruit are not quite big enough for me to be able to clearly identify what it is, I will add a picture and lets see if they are the same trees.

I have raspberries and strawberries growing and I have netted these. The birds are on the war path for my strawberries at the moment so they are going to be the next to netted.

You could always try some forms of scarecrows like CDs hanging from the branches, birds don't like anything new, trouble is it doesn't take long for them to become used to your scarecrow and then you would need to change for something else. Plastic bags on the branches might create enough fright, either that or get a bird trained cat Wink LOL

I must try your ideas for keeping the birds away. Then we can look forward to enjoying some ripe fruit straight off the tree.

However - oops - I have a strong suspicion that the "peaches" might actually be apricots  Roll Eyes (I couldn't find a smiley with a red face!).  I was misled by the reddish patch on the fruit but, ignoring that, they are the colour of apricots, they taste like apricots....

Hola Alec

I have uploaded the image that I think is a nectarine tree - the previous owner told me it was a peach tree but I had other suspicions Smiley

Yes, I think that's a nectarine, as the surface is too shiny for a peach. My apricots (as I now know them to be!) are smaller and decidedly yellow. I was misled by the fact that the skin was partly red, but - after looking through a book of apricot varieties - I see that a couple of varieties do have a reddish area.

I have now had 2 nectarines and OMG they are sooooo nice to eat, after reading about these trees they appear to be a bugger to look after and some of mine are showing signs of leaf curl.......

I will add this to my long list!
