Hola Group

Chris and I went walking in the Refugio de Juanar on Saturday and spotted some great wildlife, we saw this little bird but I don't know what it is, would be great if you could help me identify it

Cheers

Hi Campo Girl

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm pretty certain it is a male chaffinch - colourful little things, though, aren't they... and what a lovely photo.

What's happened to all our members? Not sweltering in the heat any more, that's for sure Undecided.

Hola Alex

Thanks for letting me know the sex, I am glad I got Chaffinch right though Smiley

We have more members now, which is great news, with plans to expand this winter, should be good fun Smiley

Glad you are still with us and my plans for the garden are now to plant carrots and potatoes, I have more peppers growing but the rain has been murder here so we have gone from boiling sun to lashing rain - come hell or high water I am gardening this weekend, if need be I will have to wear water proofs Smiley

Hola CG,

Yes, it's definitely the male chaffinch, as the female is quite drab by comparison. Quite the opposite of us humans, of course!

We've had a bit of a breakthrough here as the local farmer visited us, together with his wife and two boys. They were really, really nice, gave me lots of tips on pruning fruit and promised to bring some seed potatoes. In return I gave him seeds of Gardener's Delight tomatoes so maybe Spain will be converted?Huh  We'll probably see a lot of him as his wife will be cleaning for us one morning each week.

The really good thing about this is that he is telling us what he sows/plants, and when. Salad potatoes go in NOW! with maincrop soon to follow. As for lettuces, make sure you have the right variety at the right time - buying plugs from a local nursery is good advice as they can be reeloied upon to offer the most suitable type. I am currently sowing the slightly reddish winter variety, also Escarola "Angel's Hair" which worked even better than lettuce for us last year and even survived the frosts at our other house high in the mountains near Colmenar.

I know I should have posted all this in the Veg section but I'm confident that most members will find their way to it here!
