Hola Gardeners Smiley

Yesterday hubby and I were out planting our veggies and we heard a squawking, a bright green bird flew over our heads, we thought "oh wow" and continued what we were doing, the bird then came back and landed in a conifer tree by the swimming pool, I legged it up the garden to grab the camera and we got some amazing shots (I am uploading majority of them to our Flickr album - to remind you where you can find us there follow the link below).

Today the bird came back and landed in the Palm Tree, followed by a mate and it looked like he was chatting her up!

Hi

You lucky devils!!!!
Those birds are a pair of Ringneck parakeets. I would imagine they have escaped from someones private aviary.

They are extremely vocal, as no doubt you already know!!??

Oh WOW, thanks for letting me know the name of them, we were well chuffed, they graced us with their presence for around an hour across Saturday and Sunday, firstly with the 1 and then the second day what must have been a male and a female - no doubt the male was the pretty one (as is always the case with much wildlife).

Yeah they are noisy and we only stopped what we were doing because of the squawking, I haven't run that fast on my life since before I had spine surgery LOL

I must remember to always have my camera with me but I forget and don't want to damage it so it stays indoors, trouble is you always miss opportunities if the camera is left behind. Maybe I should buy a "Nutty Proof" cover for it hehehe

Thanks again Smiley

If anyone wants to see some more of these, there is a large colony of them beside the sea in Torre del Mar. Sit on the seats underneath the lighthouse on the paseo and you will see (and hear) them in the tops of the Washingtonia palms!

Hi again,

I think I better change my name to Little Digger aka Know it All!!!!???

I did send a private message to Alec, to tell him about the following;

I believe the colonies of birds he is speaking about are actually Monk Parakeets, they are very common here is Spain.
They especially seem to like Eucalyptus trees.

There are loads at the Parador in Malaga, and they can also be seen 'whizzing' through the IKEA car park!!!  Again, they are very vocal little creatures!! Extremely cute though.

They are smaller than the ringnecks, similar in colour the green of them is probably not quite so vibrant as the Ringneck.
If you want to check out either of them, (Ringnecked or Monks) Wikipedia have some good pictures and descriptions.

Back to the gardening now!!!  LD x

The ringneck parakeets landed in our garden again yesterday, when I have pulled the images off my camera later today I will upload more images, there was only 1 this time, frantically calling for it's mate, the guy that used to own the house before we had it was a keen bird lover, he had many cages/aviaries with all sorts of exotic birds, when we moved in, he came round with a bird cage and asked if he could leave it in the garden becauase a pregnant love bird had escaped and her partner was going out of his mind because she was no longer there, sadly the bird never turned up.

We are now wondering if these parakeets also escaped from his cages and this is why they now frequent our garden, could be they just like the palm tree but I did wonder if it was one of his.

Speak soon, I am off the get my veggies in the ground Smiley
