The Refugio de Juanar is a national hotel (Parador) situated 6KMs inland directly north of Marbella. It is set in a mountainous area of the Sierra Blanca at a height of over 700 metres. Beyond the hotel, there are pine and eucalyptus forests and olive plantations. A walkable track leads through these and ends at a mirador (
Mirador de Puerto Rico) that looks out over the town of Marbella. To the right of the mirador is a mountain peak known as Cruz de Juanar (altitude 1182 metres) that towers over the site.
The differing types of habitat attract a wide variety of bird species as well as other wildlife.
The site of Refugio de Juanar is easily reached from all points along the coast via the main N340 highway, or, if travelling from further inland, by driving to Coín and taking the A-355 Ójen/Marbella road.
Refugio de Juanar is situated on the main road to Marbella - coming from Coín. If you are heading from the coast of Marbella you need to take the road to Ójen from La Cañada roundabout.
When to visitThe area is popular with local families and tourists alike and can become busy and noist at weekends and on Spanish national/local holidays and it is not advisable to visit at these times as it is almost certain to prove frsutrating. The afternoon/evening sunshine can cause viewing problems on the way up to the mirador but does not affect the return trip.
The highest part of this site is 900 metres above sea-level and therefore the temperatures are always a few degrees lower than they are on the coast. It can also be more windy, so take some item of warm protective clothing with.
