I was jst checking out your Shrubs and Trees slot and remembered this little bit of info'.

You expert gardeners may already know this;

When you prune your Oleanders be very careful how you dispose of the clippings.

Do not burn them, as they give off toxic fumes.

I read a gardening column in the SUR years ago;
It was talking about this shrub, which is stunning to look at, but truly deadly. (It must be female!?!?)

There was a case of a chap who used the clippings to get his bar-b-que going, the fumes poisoned the meat, killed one person and made a fair few others very sick.

We have them up on our bank, but they are only in their first year, so don't need any pruning.
In fact, thinking about it; I'll let them just grow to their hearts content!!

Hi LD,

I  have loads of these plants in my garden and I knew they were highly poisonous, as it said in one of my gardening books! Aparently even the goats wont go anyway near them! But thanks for the tip about not burning them. I will make sure there are not any cutting of Oleander on our bon fire this weekend!

Hola

Yeah that is a good tip for the newbies out there, I knew they were poisonous and I was planning on taking mine out as it goes, I am not overly fussed about them anyway to be honest.

Years ago in the war many soldiers died from laying under the Oleanders and going to sleep - they didn't wake up!

Nasty little plants, I believe that Foxglove is also poisonous and although I love Foxgloves I would never have them in my garden while we are planning for a family.
