Fragaria, family name Rosaceae

Strawberry plants will already have set their buds for spring flowers.

Did you know?
Strawberries are members of the rose family along with blackberries and raspberries.
The Rosaceae family is huge with 3,000-4,000 species.

There are rumours that we will start to see fewer and fewer common names at garden centres, meaning we should learn the botanical names also.

How to protect Strawberry Plants for the Winter

Add mulch to the strawberry bed - should you fail to do this you may damage the flower bud, freezing and thawing soil can cause root breakages

Strawberry Mulch
2-3 inches of clean, weed-free straw, (tree leaves and grass clippings are not recommended). Wait until the plants are dormant before adding. Mulch plants before the temps drop below 20 degrees - late November early December would be best, depends where you live!

Before new leaves appear in the spring, rake the mulch off

Good luck with baby sitting your strawberries for the winter
