This afternoon I have been out in the garden and we have found a large mushroom type of thing. How can you find out if its a type of wild mushroom and edible, not poisonous?

Second thing is that a visitor said we have wild spinich growing in the garden, how can I find out if it is indeed spinich as it would save me a fortune on spinich and is it true that too much spinich is toxic ?
 Huh
I would take some photos but some nasty pasty stole my camera last week.

Questions question questions................................please help as its driving me bonkers!

Hola Gayley

Try this link for your mushrooms, might help
Mushrooms, edible and poisonous

I don't think there is any Spinach that is poisonous, anyone here know the true answer to this question. I know that reheating Spinach can turn it nasty but I don't think you have problems eating what is growing in your garden.

I have asked around for you and I am waiting for replies on this so we know for sure, don't want you eating it and being ill!

Sorry to hear about the camera babe, nasty bugger!

Will report when I have details for you

XOXO

Hi Gayley

Some people claim to use nettles as a substitute for spinach - could your visitors have been pulling your leg?

In any case, I don't think anything can substitute for the real thing - I love it, along with parsnips, my two most favourite veggies.

It's actually very good for you, with plenty of iron and good antioxidant properties to help guard against cancer. The only downside is that its oxalic acid content means that anyone with kidney problems shouldn't eat too much of it.

See Botanical Online for full details. And remember never to cook it in water, which ruins its wonderful flavour - just shake the washed leaves half-dry and then simmer in butter. Mmmmm....! Roll Eyes
