Hi,

can't seem to figure out how to start a new topic, so here it is: growing your own wheat.
Anyone have any experience? I'd love to give it a go, but I'm guessing it's a bit late in the year to start?

Hola Lizzie

You can now create new topics, in order to post new topics you need to be "junior member" status, as there are so many spammers I do not allow anyone to do anything when they first join, otherwise, robots just come along and start posting spam Smiley

I have changed your profile and you can now start new topics

Hi Lizzy,
I read that BBC article on wheat growing by amateurs and it certainly raised some interesting ideas.  I can understand the desire to grow if you have enough land to make it worthwhile to produce a decent amount of flour for your own consumption and here in Spain it should be possible to talk to local farmers about the viability, what type of wheat to grow, etc. Also they may be willing to share their machinery to help make it less labour intensive, which would seem to me to be the main put off, threshing, chaffing etc.!   Our friend, Miguel, farms down the hill from us and grows wheat organically, so next time I see him will have a word about it and let you know any info I pick up.  However, I am sure he will hoot with laughter when I raise the topic - us English, whatever next!!!!  (This year he´s growing barley, remember crop rotation!).
Try Wikepedia for a start, it has some quite useful info about types of wheat and also the dreaded diseases and pests they are susceptible to.  Also some agricultural sites can be helpful, commercial of course.  I found out loads about tomatoes from the Spanish commercial sites.
I think if you have the fortitude to pursue this it will be most rewarding and we look forward to hearing of your progress.
Cheers
Suzy
