Hola

Have any members here had a palm tree removed due to the dreaded weevil? I have had someone ask a question on our blog about the weevil as they have just had a palm tree removed because of the weevil and wondered if they can now plant something else in its place, she is asking about the soil, will it be OK?

Thanks

Simone

We had red weevils in one of our palm trees.  As it was a public holiday we had to deal with it oursleves to stop it infesting other trees.  As the palm was a large low decorative one we dug it up and burnt it.   Then we cleared the hole of any grubs and cocoons which were oval and appeared to be made from the fibre of the palm.  Inside each one was a grub. the grubs are quite large about an inch and a half long and white with a reddish black nose, they are quite vile and resemble the wichety grub.  They seem to pulsate.  We put every one that we found in a plastic bag and the sun killed them.  We then put petrol and diesel in the hole and set fire to it.

Since then we have planted a smaller palm in the area and this has taken well with no side effects.  We have not had any weevils since nor has our neighbour.

I took photographs if required I can send them

Hola Lar

Great advice, thanks. I will upgrade you to enable you to post images, you will have to change the size, however, as it is restricted due to space Smiley

I would love to have these images for use on the blog post we have about red weevils, would that be OK?

If you could send them to me as well as posting here I would appreciate it, I like them larger for the blog you see Smiley

We have heard many stories of these nasties but I still don“t have some good images to use as we have not been (touch wood) affected Smiley

Thanks
