Hola Liz and Fiona

Welcome to the site.  I hope you will enjoy the experience of gardening in Spain which is great fun.  We are based about 30 minutes from Granada, up in the hills between Loja and Huerta Tajar, right in the middle of asparagus growing territory.  I love going past the co-ops this time of year and seeing all the asparagus, neatly cut, loaded onto the back of the flat beds for packaging.  The asparagus growers are not doing vey well this year, Mercadona has cut its purchase by about 20K euros.  Apparently China is a big contender in the market now.   Sorry, I´m getting on my soap box now!   The soil is incredibly fertile round here, you can more or less see the lettuces, onions, etc. grow as you pass.  Huerta means "market garden" in Spanish.   Our markets in the area are packed with gorgeous veg. although fruit is a bit hit and miss.   We have about 60 olive trees and 30 almond trees on our land,  my actual garden area is quite small compared to my acre in the UK but I try to make the most of it, supplemented by loads of pots and we have planted some cherry trees amongst the almonds, plus inherited a pear tree.  Fortunately we have our own well, so no problem watering, especially this past couple of years!!
Cheers

Hi .. just thought I´d introduce myself .. and sorry but have to tag on the end of this thread as I can´t seem to find "post new" topic .. I live in Almeria province and have done for the past 6 years .. over the years we´ve (thats me, hubby & 5 kids) had various moves towards self-sufficiency re growing our own veg, chickens, geese & turkeys, but unfortunately now rent a house with only a very small plot so we´re sticking to a few easy things for the kids to grow and maybe some flowers this year! We run a gardening business down here with an online section selling seeds, plugs, and more as we build up connections with local craftspeople etc  and hubby also runs a kitchen garden for an artist´s retreat which is moving towards self-sufficiency. But I spend too much of my time on the computer and not enough outdoors! Which is why this place looked great .. I can chat to people about gardens whilst I´m on it ..  Smiley.

Hola,

After a frustrating few hours on google, I found you guys!

I have my first garden! after 10 years of living in apartments, I moved in with my OH 18 months ago into a lovely townhouse near Estepona with a roofterrace and garden!

The garden is an ok size for us (will be a different story when we have kids!) we have patio doors leading from the living room onto a grass area with a pergola and table/chairs, this area can squish around 20 people seated at a bbq (whatever that is in square meters  Smiley)
It is a corner plot and around the corner we have a large shed! the garden is bordered all the way round by flower beds (prob a meter wide)....

It is not a huge area, but I seem to have constant questions! I hope that you guys can help me learn!

ps. In case you are wondering, the internet search is due to me having grub worms eating my lawn! Which my first question would be related to!  Smiley

chuffed to bits as I have harvested my first home grown tomato this morning!
I have 5000 m2 as well, mostly rocky hillside, but previous owners have made terraces and little pathways, so I can get around okay-ish.

Ahhh yes I remember when I had my first tomato and my first harvest of many of the crops I have grown, it is very exciting and rewarding isn't it Smiley

I am a little slow on my tomatoes this year but I have 6 crops and they are coming, just not ready for eating yet

Thanks for sharing with us, we love hearing about what you are up to, post some images if you want
