The geranium moth is an unwanted visitor from Africa which has decimated Andalucia's geraniums in the last 15 or so years.  It is small and brown and lays its eggs in the stems, which then turn black inside and start to rot.  It is actually the caterpillar that is doing the damage, and can be controlled by using an insecticide such as Decis by Bayer.  Spray new plants every two weeks to avoid infestation, but if you already have the problem cut the geraniums right back and/or start again with cuttings.  The general advice is not to fork out for products labelled as generanium insecticides as they are no better and cost twice as much.
