We have started a post in DIY Jobs for the Boys but I wanted to have out chicken conversations in the animals board as the DIY posting I was doing is related to the building of the coop, any chicken related conversations will now continue on this thread.

According to Gina my chickens probably will not lay for some weeks now but that is OK, gives us time to gel, we do not know how old they are as we forgot to ask! I was so excited we just bought what we needed and headed home, it was not until we got home we realised that we should have asked but as Gina gets her hens from there also she can help us there Smiley

Hi All,

We reckon the chickens were around a 2-3 months old when we bought them, but they didnt seem to lay any eggs until they were around 6 months old. I am only speaking from my own experience, it is possible every chicken is different, but the 6 we have had all seem to lay around the same time.
Last summer they stopped laying eggs, we found out from our neighbour, who also has chickens, that it was too hot for them! They have been laying plenty since Dec and am getting 3 a day again. We have been doing lots of baking just to use them up!

I know once they start laying eggs you will never buy another egg from the shops! Just cant beat fresh ones Smiley

Well you cannot deny that eh babes. Having you´re own eggs is unbeatable, I am enjoying their company and funny ways since they have been with us - not keen on them coming up to the terrace and having a crap but still - it made me laugh when they decided to come see us yesterday afternoon and popped their head in - the rooster even thought he was going to have a run around the house but we soon put stop to that!

Nigella is very chatty and greedy which makes mne laugh - Dehlia and Henny Penny are not as confident as Nigella, she will allow us to touch and stroke her but the other two are having none of it!

So far I would say they are very easy to train

Thanks for the advice Smiley

Oh how funny Gordon trying to have a mooch in the house! He sounds a bit nosey Smiley

One of my girls sounds just like Nigella, we call her Gobby as she is very gobby!! She is the greedy one and doesnt leave me alone when I am in their coop, they are funny things arent they Smiley

Are you feeding them your scraps from the kitchen? Mine arent keen on potato peelings but love anything green, cabbage, lettuce and even left over pasta!

Looking forward to meeting them later on today Smiley

Well, we have had the chickens now for 2 weeks, coming up for 3 this Thursday. Chris and I have enjoyed having them here and one of the hens lets me pick her up and cuddle gher, which is very lovely.

I have been amazed at their behaviour and how relatively easy they are to train. We are having issues with them coming up to the house all the time but we think that once we get rid of the weeds and they can see the rest of the garden they will spend most of their time down instead of up!

We have been trying them with treats such as sweetcorn and peanuts, which they absolutely love! I have even found recipes for chicken biscuits which contain crunchy peanut butter LOL!

On the various forums I have been on that are dedicated to chickens there are many people who give their chickens cabbage, broccoli, lettuce and all that jazz but ours just do not like it so I guess we just have sweetcorn lovers Smiley

After a few days we had trained them to use their house, as for the first few days they were going underneath their house rather than in it! But they have the hang of it now and are happily nesting, they have sorted out their bedding to their taste and seem to change where they sleep, either laying on the straw or perching on the ladder we made for them.

We have now had 5 eggs and Nigella is the first to lay (see our post My First Egg)

Would love to hear your chicken stories and what treats you feed your chickens Smiley

Have a good Easter and speak soon

Hola Suzy

They are doing good, I will take a photo of the eggs we are now getting, all 3 of our girls are now laying and they are a lovely size Smiley

Gordon the Rooster has grown himself a pair of bollocks and is now getting territorial and bit Mark (Gina's husband) last week, pecked his foot LOL! Poor Mark, so we are having to fight him every now and then and get him back into his pecking order, he has tried more times to have me than Chris but I hit him with a spade and that seems to calm him down!

Little bugger (well I should say big!) will flap his wings and try to peck me and jump at me, he is beautiful though but I think he will have to be penned in when we have kids here as I do not trust him Smiley

LOL, "Beware of the Rooster", he is very territorial bless him, he only seems to go for people when they are walking around, he follows me around the garden and helps me weed with his girls but he never attacks me then

Fun and games with chickens and roosters in the house Smiley
