Well, we've just ordered 4 hop bines from the UK and I'm clearing a patch at the back for Barley - can you guess where this is going  Wink

Bring on the summer and some nice hoppy 'Brit style' homebrew to wash down the BBQ Fud. Not that there's anything wrong with Mercadonna Lager, but it's nice to have a change...

Hi Nick
It will be very interesting to hear how your hops progress and I'm sure everyone will look forward to updates from you.  They should do well over here, don't know much about growing them and it will be an an education to learn from you so we can all produce some "proper" ale.
Good luck with your efforts.
Cheers

Hi Simone
Guess what  .... in the foxgloves were 4 other seeds which I don't have a clue what they are.    I have planted them and am looking forward to seeing what they are. It's a bonus!!!!

Hi Nick

Having seen hops growing in the UK and being amazed how tall they become, I am just wondering what dizzy heights they may reach under Spanish conditions! When dried, of course, they also make excellent home decoration, if only to remind you of many English pubs which have them draped around the bar.

Please keep us posted on this... and, eventually, on the results of your home brew  Wink

Hi Nick,
great plan, I love hops (and beer).
you say you got them from the UK, is there anywhere in Andalusia to get them?

kind regards,

Liz

Well, despite being held up for a week by Icelandic volcanoes, they're going looking quite vigorous and growing like crazy-o.

I couldn't find anywhere to get hold of hop vines in Andalucia, so I had to resort to importing them from the UK.  Pricey, to be sure, but in the long run much cheaper than importing packet hops ( and they're certainly handsome plants).

I'm not expecting too much from them the first year, but I wonder if in year two, it might be possible to divide the roots? I'm not wise in hop lore yet...but I'll do some reasearch if anyone wants to try their luck next year...

hopefully, they're going to hide a particularly ugly fence made of old bed frames too : )

I got' em from here: http://www.hopshop.co.uk/

I have to say that I was really, really impressed both with their level of knowledge and their customer service.

Highly recommended, but definitely not cheap...

Followed your link and I see what you mean about expensive!!  I presume you had to drive there and back to pick them up too.  Looked an impressive set up, these poor farmers eh?  Still as you say it will be worth it for the end results.   Did you get Fuggles or the other one?  Look forward to your progress.
Cheers
