Reap the rewards of your fruit planting during August. Raspberries, gooseberries and currants are ripe for the picking. After picking, prune the old canes of raspberries right back, so they will leave space for the new ones to grow in the spring.
Gardening is much more cost effective if you take cuttings from plants now (I am crap at this!). It's the ideal way to restock borders for the next summer. Cut side shoots from plants and pot up, dipping the roots in hormone rooting powder first. Place the pots on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse.
Keep an eye on hedges, especially conifers, and trim them into shape. It's also the time to pick and dry fragrant lavender.
Borders will bloom and bloom if you are vigilant. Deadhead flowers as soon as they start to fade and you´ll enjoy the colour well into early autumn.
Go fishing! Clear algae and nasty weeds from ponds otherwise they spread quickly.
