Hi guys,
I'm a newbie at all this. I have quite a few almond and olive trees, and especially the almonds are looking as if they're ready. Is now the time to pick them? How can I tell?

Hi Lizzy
Yes this is the time to pick almonds.  It is easier if you wait until they are bursting out of their husks.  If you have a net (or even a big sheet), spread that out under the tree and whack the branches with a big stick (very therapeutic Cheesy).  Once collected, they need to be left in the sun to dry out for 2 or 3 days.  Almonds will keep for about 7 years, we think they taste better when they are a year old.  Store them in sacks or a plastic, lidded bin.  They are only selling for about 50 cents a kilo, 60 cents for the rounded ones, so we were amazed to see huge quantities from California at our local co-op...... air miles anyone Undecided

Dependent on your variety, olives can be picked from December/January onwards, you should be able to tell when they are ready.  This year, due to all the rain they were very late around here picking them and a lot had fallen to the ground but they were still raked up and usable.

Rounded Almonds are the sweet ones and the pointy ones bitter if I remember rightly.  Is this correct?

You say 'you should be able to tell when they [olives] are ready'.  How?
