Hi everyone,

We have both swallows and house martins (also crag martins and swifts) and I like to think that I can identify them quite easily.

However, I have always believed that house martins build cup-shaped nests under the eaves, and swallows make an open cup on top of the the beams of a building.

Our swallows haven“t read the same book, apparently. They build a cup-shaped nest on the outside of our house, but with a long tunnel leading into it. Rather like an igloo upside-down!

No such species exists in "Birds of Britain and Europe". Has anyone else come across them?

Alec.

I see lots of what I think are swallows and then I am told they are house martins but I have never had the joy of them building a nest near the house

Send in some shots Alec, I love these little birds, they regularly drink from the pool
