They do sting, yes. They are bees so sting like any bee would, if disturbed. Chris and I always called them "helicopters" - don't ask why cos I don't know LOL.

If you look at their wings, they are actually quite nice looking (wings only!) because of the nice blue/black colouring on them, we had one trying to make home in the shed yesterday - watch any wood that you may have lying around the house or anywhere else - they are partial to setting up home in wood.

This is where they get their name from, the fact that nearly all species (500 of them!) build their nests in burrows in dead wood, bamboo, or structural timbers. Members of the related tribe Ceratinini are sometimes referred to as "Small Carpenter Bees, these smaller bees nest in the ground and this is what we have seen in our garden - shame I don't have an image of them Smiley

Don't hate them everyone, they are really chummy bees.  We call them Bee52's for obvious reasons.  They harmlessly bumble around, pun intended, and pollinate lots of flowers, I have seen them so loaded with pollen they can hardly take off.  Okay they buzz round us and make us jump but it's only because they are so big we get a bit freaked.  If it's a choice between them and the teeny weeny ants that invade my work surfaces because I haven't cleaned every crumb from it, them give me the Bee52''s any day, at least they don't invade my space!
Cheers

Ah yeah I do not mind them either, they used to really freak me out but I would not harm one as I know they are similar to normal bees and are harmless, never seen them with pollen though - that would be an awesome picture Smiley

This topic was started in 2008 so yes we started talking about them 2 years ago, as someone has posted a reply the topic moves to the top

Many of our threads will appear if they are old when someone replies, if people require the help on certain topics then it is fine to keep discussing Smiley
